A Reminiscence of the UPS and DOWNS of JAVIER NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

The philosophy of barrio school was the same as that of other school in the country which gave every Filipino the opportunity to develop their capabilities to the utmost which would enable to go further in terms of the knowledge through education.

What the people wishes to happen was that the government should assist these initiative as a result of sharing the burden of support. It would be unfortunate if deprived of this chances by the expedience of nationalizing these high schools by providing funds which could not be released for unknown reasons.

When the municipality of Javier (formerly named Bugho) was inaugurated on January 5, 1964, there was no high school yet; hence elementary graduates tend to go to Abuyog or Tacloban to pursue their studies.

Others whose parents could not afford, had to let their children stop schooling thereby be contended as elementary graduates and worked in farms.

It was at this point where Mr. Gregorio Roca, the Principal of Javier Central School dreamt of establishing a Barrio High School. With meager funds, he asked the assistance of then Mayor Ambrosio Novio and Mayor Abelardo Mercado (1967) about the proposed Barrio High School. Mr. Roca did hid best for the proposal, and with the support and guidance of Mayors ovio and Mercado, a Barrio High School in Javier, Leyte was opened in July 24, 1967.

Mr. Roca became the assistant principal of the newly opened high school, with some elementary teachers, Mr. Rodulfo Soledad, Mrs. Lily de Luna, Mr. Romeo Cinco and Mr. Butch Padagdag as part-time teachers. The school was under auspices of Dulag High School as mother school with Mr. Salvador Bautista as the first Principal.

Mrs. Lucia B. Torre became the first full time teacher of the first year class on July 24, 1967 while on July 26, 1967-1968, Mrs. Luz Rosal came in as as first full time teacher handling the second year class. In the succeeding year Miss Rebecca Pedrigal, Miss Violeta Irag and Miss Cresencia Villeza were added as teachers to augment the growing number of students enrolling in the school.

It can be recalled that Javier Barrio High School was its first name for two years, but later it was change to Javier Community High School. During the Martial Law Era (1972) series of decrees demanding innovations in the Marcos "New Society" were made, thus the name was change again to Javier Barangay High School.

During the reign of the President Corazon C. Aquino, Nationalization of schools and salaries of teachers in the secondary were implemented by the government and again the name of school was finally change to Javier National High School.

Payments as tuition fess of the student goes to the salaries of teachers but then because of the nationalization of Aquino Administration, teachers received their salaries from government funds.

School went through its diffuculties of time, from overcrowded rooms, lack of chairs and books, to the improper ventilation which resulted to many dropouts. To solve these inconveniences, aside from from the Marcos Type Building of Javier Central School that was used by High school classes, the Ancestral home of Ex. Mayor Novio was rented so it could accommodate third year classes.

In the school year 1969-1970, classes were moved to its present site situated at Real Street of Zone 1, Poblacion, Javier, Leyte with complete first to fourth year levels. The first graduation exercises was held on April 3, 1970 with Miguela Golgota, Valedictorian, Thelma Luaña, Salutatorian leading the pack of 10 males and 13 female graduates.

It was also on that year where Mrs. Lydia Saliwan @ Leticia Rodriguez were assigned in the school, followed in the succeeding year by Ms. Cipriana Bohol.

Through the years, the school beamed with pride for vast improvement it has undergone, from its physical features standardized teaching strategies and the emergence of more competent administrators and teachers who were serving students from nearby barangays and municipalities.

From its Principal, Ms. Rebecaa S. Pedrigal, who made a never-ending effort to uplift the standard of teaching, the school also participated and won in different contests in the division, regional and national competition.

Whn Bernardita Robin tookl  over the school administration in the school year 2003-2004, annex lot situated at the back part of the chool main building was purchased with parents support and teachers. A concrete guard house and the renovated steel gate showcases changes in her administration.

Upon the assumption of Mrs. Bernardita L. De Paz as Principal for a short-span of time much improvement and facelifting of the school had been made as seen nowadays, with the concrete fencing of the back part of the school, the construction of three jetmatic pumps, classroom repairs and the painting of the main school building.

In the field of academics and athletics, the school continues to reap more laurels in Journalism, Math, Science, and athletics meets in the region and national level.

Today, Javier National High School (JNHS) stood proud with the accomplishment it had made 41 years ago. We see now the fruits from the sweat of the founders, abd the leaders, and the doers, the lot donors, Felipe Vivero and Manuel Cultura, and the alumni....

The school had already bear several teachers alumni, Violeta Cultura, Cesar Montaño, Zenaida Cumla, Elies Leona, Ma. Cecilia Cerna, Enrique Enciso, Angelina Vivero, Gerry Apilar, Delia Taburada and Vivien Mamac who stood to be loyal to their Alma Mater.
